Scalamandré Wallpaper For A Powder Room

Ohhhh I just love Scalamandré. There is something about their wallpapers & fabrics that just makes a statement! The core of their prints are slightly over the top, adding boldness and drama. If you put them on your walls, you’ve probably have a little bit of a wild streak. Yet, at the same time, they are a throwback to classic style, refined quality, and timeless design.

Now, you may not know Scalamandré immediately by name, but I bet you know their iconic galloping Zebra wallpaper? At over 90 years old, Scalamdré is one of the oldest design houses in America. You can see them hanging on the walls of William Randolph Hearst’s Castle to the Red Room at the White House’s. They have done so much over the years, check out their historical timeline.

Even as a successful Sotheby's real estate agent, my client Theresa Taylor, had a wild streak in her. So when she said yes to wallpaper in our inspirational meeting, I knew that Scalamandre would be a perfect fit for her. She was very clear that she did not want a typical beige & white house. She wanted colors, she wanted unexpected & individuality. These were features I knew Scalamandré could deliver and I had the perfect rooms for them to shine. I wrote a previous blog on her fabulous living room. Check it out here.

The Powder Room

There is something magical about entering a tiny powder room covered in wallpaper or bold paint. Knowing Theresa & her husband Jerry’s love for fish, led me to the Mikinos hand printed wallpaper. Engulfed in sea creatures, it actually looks like little mosaic tiles in a variation of beautiful blues hues. I wish I could cut a sample for everyone of you to see & touch. (Email me, I’ll send you one:) You can truly see & feel each paint stroke.

We took her 1st floor powder room & turned it into an entirely new space. We took the existing vanity and having it repainted in a deep forest green color. I matched it to this lovely beaded mirror that would enhance the tone of the room. The hardware was updated to a fresh gold finish with matching accessories. But it really was the oversized gold curved door pulls that add to the Wow Factor!

My favorite addition are the HOT PINK wall sconces, with clear acrylic bases allowing the paper to show through. I saw these beauties at a show years ago & couldn’t wait for the perfect project to use them. Theresa was the lucky one. Seriously amazing! Do you see that high gloss finish?

Throughout the house I repeated the same color themes. Yellow is one color that was threaded into each room. The stationary romanshade gave life to a bland window, adding a softness to the room. Never forget the art, using a vintage piece she already owned added warmth to the room.
