Designing A Nursery For Twin Baby Girls
Newlyweds to Newborns: The Katz Nursery Reveal
Sometimes you are given a project where you can let your talent & passion flow. Where you can envision the project & give it every bell and whistle. It's always exciting when a new baby is expected. It is even more exciting when you're expecting 2! As newlyweds, Kelly & Jake really wanted to build a special room to welcome their daughters. And you know, Dana was up for the task.
I always joke that you get two kind of dads in the studio. The ones that are tortured by this process & are like "WHY AM I HERE??". Then there are the other dads who go through every fabric & still can't find the right pink! Jake was the latter & I LOVED it. It's so sweet when dads are involved & really into the process. Together they both sat down & worked together to bring their vision to life. They wanted to go girlie with ruffles, bows & soft pinks. But they were not afraid to add strong pops of coral & subtle hints of mint.
Room for Two
When choosing the right furniture for this project, I knew Newport Cottages was going to be the best choice. The Hilary collection is inspired by classic French Provincial designs mixed with shabby chic elements. The crib features hand-carved cabriole legs and the scalloped bottom gives it that feminine feel I was going for.
The comfy & cozy Sarah glider from Four Seasons is always a fav. We custom designed a slip-cover in sleek silver velvet fabric. It juxtaposes to the sweetness of the room. I went with the Max bookcase from Newport Cottages for a little modern edge, two toned with the coral. I swapped out the original hardware for a little glam with crystal knobs.
We were able to incorporate existing furniture pieces already in the home. Kelly had this great big armoire & large double dresser that were in dark finishes. So she called in Lisa Marie who specializes in decorative painting. She matched white from the Newport Cottages crib & bookcase and added a zebra pattern to the doors of the armoire & the sides of the dresser. Everything coordinated seamlessly.
Beauty in the Details
I always say the strength of the design is in the fabrics. The fabrics bring it all to life. With a variety of rich textured fabrics, I knew Bebe Chic was the right fit. We matched bedding on each crib with P, sheets, a gathered dust ruffle, pillows & toddler blankets. We used the same fabrics to create custom balloon valances with ruffles from Laurie McParland Designs.

Thank You Quine
I usually take the majority of my photos on my iPhone. But when I arrived at the Katz home their amazing AuPair from Port Alfred on the Eastern Cape of South Africa was armed with a REAL Camera. As an aspiring photographer, I let her show off her skills & she killed it! Quine captured the shots I needed to help bring this reveal to life. #sograteful #ineedtogetacamera
